Domestic Solar PV

What Are Solar Panels

Solar panel electricity systems, also known as photovoltaics (PV), capture the sun’s energy using photovoltaic cells. These cells don’t need direct sunlight to work – they can still generate electricity on a cloudy day. The cells convert the sunlight into electricity, which can be used to run household appliances and lighting

How Do Solar Panels (PV) Work

PV cells are made from layers of semi-conducting material, usually silicon. When light shines on the cell it creates an electric field across the layers. The stronger the sunshine, the more electricity is produced. Groups of cells are mounted together in panels or modules that can either be mounted on your roof or on the ground. The power of a PV cell is measured in kilowatts peak (kWp). That’s the rate at which it generates energy at peak performance in full direct sunlight during the summer. PV cells come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Most PV systems are made up of panels that fit on top of an existing roof, but you can also fit solar tiles.

The Myths About Solar

There are countless misconceptions when it comes to solar energy, but the most widespread is that solar panels need sunlight to generate power. This simply is not true! Modern solar panels are perfectly capable of generating power even in cloudy conditions. That’s because PV solar panels only need UV light, rather than sunshine, to work at full capacity. To find out more about how investing in solar power could save you money, reduce your carbon footprint, and even add value to your property, continue to browse our website or contact us directly on 0115 845 6556 to speak to one of our expert Solar PV technicians about how we can help with your energy needs.

The Photocolatic Effect

PV solar panels are made from cells composed of layers of silicon, phosphorous and boron. When these cells are struck by sunlight, the panels’ design allows them to absorb the photons present. These photons cause the electrons in the solar cells to react and break free from their atomic orbits, creating an electrical charge. With phosphorous electrons generating a negative charge and boron electrons a positive charge, the combined effect is the creation of directional current, or DC electricity.

How This Benefits You

The DC charge created by your PV solar panels must then be converted into an AC (Alternating Current) supply in order to be compatible with domestic appliances. This is done with inverters, which use electromagnetic switches to repeatedly ‘flip’ the DC charge backwards and forwards, producing an AC current. It is then safe for use in domestic power sockets, allowing you to plug in all your appliances as normal. At Nottingham Energy Centre, we offer a broad range of solar panels for your roof. Our fully qualified and highly experienced team will happily install anything from a single panel to a full PV array.
